Foods that can be saut闁慸 include potatoes, bacon, and onions, as shown in this low-sided saucepan
Saut闁昻g is a method of cooking food that uses a small amount of fat in a shallow pan over relatively high heat. Unlike pan-searing, saut闁 are often finished with a sauce made from the pan's residual fond. Sauter means "to jump" in French The method includes flipping the food in the air.
Food that is saut闁慸 is usually cooked for a relatively short period of time over high heat, with the goal of browning the food while preserving its color, moisture and flavor. This is very common with more tender cuts of meat, e.g. tenderloin, pork chops, or filet mignon. Saut闁昻g differs from searing in that the saut闁慸 food is thoroughly cooked in the process. One may sear simply to add flavor and improve appearance before another process is used to finish cooking it.
Olive oil or clarified butter are commonly used for saut闁昻g, but most fats will do. Regular butter will produce more flavor but will burn at a lower temperature and more quickly than other fats due to the presence of milk solids.

A cook sautees onions and green peppers in a saut pan
To saut, a hot pan is required, large enough to hold all of the food in one layer. A saut pan is ideal for saut闁昻g; it has a wide flat base and low sides, to maximize the surface area available for heating. The low sides allow quick evaporation and escape of steam. The sides of a saut pan are rounded, and flare outward, to allow quick turning of ingredients without a spatula, simply using pan movement to turn ingredients. Many cookware manufacturers mislabel what is essentially a low-sided saucepan as a saut pan. The top photo used in this article, for example, shows a low-sided saucepan. The lower picture shows a saut pan. Only enough fat to lightly coat the bottom of the pan is needed for saut闁昻g. Using too much fat will cause the saut to fry rather than to slide. The food is spread across the hot fat in the pan, and left to brown, turning or tossing occasionally for even cooking. When saut闁昻g meat, a fork should not be used for turning as it will pierce the meat and let the juices escape,[1], which will dry the meat. Tossing or stirring the items in the pan by shaking the pan too often can cause the pan to cool faster, and make the saut take longer.
The two most important items to watch are that the pan is very hot, and that the food is not crowded into the pan. This ensures that the food browns well without absorbing the fat or stewing in its own juices. Furthermore, the food must be relatively dry in order to keep the pan from cooling and to keep the moisture from building up in the pan; moisture will steam or stew the food. This is particularly significant in the case of food that has been marinated.
The tossing technique is an element that some prefer while saut闁昻g. The act of tossing involves first tightly gripping the handle of the pan, then pushing it forward to the front of the pan and quickly yanking the pan an inch or so backwards, causing the food to slide up the far side of the pan, into the air, and back to the center of the pan. This requires a fairly non-stick pan with rounded edges, so that the food is curled up and back, rather than jettisoned forward.
When saut闁昻g cuts of meat, the surface of the meat should be dry and the meat should be at room temperature. Pat the meat with paper towels or other material to dry the surface. When the meat is first placed in the pan, it should sizzle, and it may stick to a non-stick pan surface. The meat should not be moved while cooking. When the meat 'releases' from the surface, i.e. when the meat becomes easy to move, it is done on that side and should be turned over, preferably with a pair of tongs so that the surface of the meat is not punctured.
When saut闁昻g mushrooms, many of the same rules apply. The mushrooms should not be piled on top of each other in the pan and should not be stirred or turned until they are brown and the cooking is complete on one side. It is helpful to avoid adding salt to the mushrooms until the end of the cooking process since salt draws out moisture. [2]

C size batteries typically are used in medium-drain applications like toys and musical instruments. The C battery type was standardized by ANSI as "14A" (alkaline) and is known internationally as LR14 (alkaline) or R14 (zinc-carbon).
C sized batteries are composed of a single chamber and are more correctly referred to as a cell. The nominal output voltage of single-use C batteries is 1.5 volts, while NiCd and NiMH rechargeable batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.2 V. Specialty batteries based on more unusual chemistries can run at a voltage as high as 1.6 V under load. The voltage of a C battery is the same as an AAA, AA or D cell. C batteries however provide power for a longer period than AA batteries, because their larger size allows them to store a greater mass of anode material which is consumed as it does electrical work. D cells, being larger, last longer still; as a rough guide, the capacity of a battery scales linearly with its mass.
Alkaline C batteries can hold up to 8,000 mAh, NiMH ones can have up to 6,000 mAh, and zinc-carbon ones usually have up to 3,800 mAh.

A keyhole saw with a wooden handle.
A keyhole saw (also called a pad saw, alligator saw, jab saw or drywall saw) is a long, narrow saw used for cutting small, often awkward features in various building materials. There are typically two varieties of keyhole saw: the fixed blade type and retractable blade type.
The retractable blade variety is usually found to have either a cast iron handle or, less commonly, a wooden handle. The facility to retract the blade to an optimum length serves to prevent unwanted flex to the blade should the full length of the blade be obstructed in some way. In both types the blade is typically secured by one or two holding/thumb screws.
The fixed blade type, often being cheaper to manufacture and purchase (due to fewer parts) is therefore more commonly used in the modern construction trade. With the advance of certain building methods and materials, designs specific to these trades have been developed. One such modification being a sharpened point at the tip of the blade which can be pushed or 鎱綼bbed through soft materials such as drywall without pre-drilling a hole for the blade.
Two power tools serving largely the same function but which work more quickly and with less effort are the jigsaw and spiral saw.

Maintenance
Maintenance of the saw blade will depend on the type and or age of the tool. Older key hole saws with filed crosscut teeth will require the craftsman to manually set and sharpen the teeth by hand. For contemporary versions of the retractable blade variety replacement blades are readily available thus removing the skills, tools and time that would otherwise be required to manually sharpen the blade. Mass production of cheap throw away versions of the fixed blade type make it cost effective for the tradesman to do exactly that and purchase a new replacement when the teeth become blunt.

ICOM IC-91AD handheld transceiver with the D-STAR UT-121 digital voice board installed
D-STAR (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio) is a digital voice and data protocol specification developed as the result of research by the Japan Amateur Radio League to investigate digital technologies for amateur radio. While there are other digital on-air technologies being used by amateurs that have come from other services, D-Star is one of the first on-air standards to be widely deployed and sold by a major radio manufacturer that is designed specifically for amateur service use.
D-Star compatible radios are available on VHF and UHF and microwave amateur radio bands. In addition to the over-the-air protocol, D-Star also provides specifications for network connectivity, enabling D-Star radios to be connected to the Internet or other networks and provisions for routing data streams of voice or packet data via amateur radio callsigns.
The first manufacturer to offer D-Star compatible radios is Icom. As of December 30, 2008, no other amateur radio equipment manufacturer has chosen to include D-Star technology in their radios. Kenwood re-brands an Icom radio and distributes it in Japan only.

ICOM ID-800H mobile D-STAR transceiver
1999 Funded by the Japanese government and administrated by the JARL, investigation was put into finding a new way of bringing digital technology to amateur radio.
2001 D-Star is published as the result of the research.
Unknown Date Icom enters the construction of the new digital technology by offering the hardware necessary to create this technology.
Unknown Date The conclusion of all this work is the digital technology for amateur radio called D-Star.[1]
February, 1 2008 - Icom announces the availability of Gateway 2.0 software.
April 23, 2008 - Icom and US trust server administration announce the shutdown of the Gateway 1.0 U.S. trust server will occur at 00:00 UTC on June 1, 2008, at which time all systems should have transitioned to Gateway 2.0 software and the new U.S. trust server.
Technical details
D-STAR transfers both voice and data via digital encoding over the 2m (VHF), 70cm (UHF), and 23cm (1.2GHz) amateur radio bands. There is also an interlinking radio system for creating links between systems in a local area on 10GHz.
Within the D-Star Digital Voice protocol standards (DV), voice audio is encoded as a 3600bit/s data stream using proprietary AMBE encoding, with 1200bit/s FEC, leaving 1200bit/s for an additional data "path" between radios utilizing DV mode. On air bit rates for DV mode are 4800bit/s over the 2m, 70cm and 23cm bands.
In addition to DV mode, a high speed Digital Data (DD) mode can be sent at 128kbit/s only on the 23cm band. A higher-rate proprietary data protocol, currently believed to be much like ATM, is used in the 10GHz "link" radios for site-to-site links.
Radios providing DV data service within the low-speed voice protocol variant typically use an RS-232 or USB connection for low speed data (1200bit/s), while the Icom ID-1 23cm band radio offers a standard Ethernet connection for high speed (128kbit/s) connections, to allow easy interfacing with computer equipment.[2]
Importance of Digital Technology and D-STAR
As long as the signal strength is above a minimum threshold, and no multi-path is occurring, the quality of the data received is better than an analog signal at the same strength.
The system today is capable of linking repeaters together locally and through the Internet utilizing callsigns for routing of traffic. Servers are linked via TCP/IP utilizing proprietary "gateway" software, available from Icom. This allows amateur radio operators to talk to any other amateurs participating in a particular gateway "trust" environment. The current master gateway in the United States is operated by the K5TIT group in Texas, who were the first to install a D-Star repeater system in the U.S.[3]
Another important aspect of D-STAR technology is its ability to send large quantities of data to emergency responders in the event of a...(and so on)

Plot
Jim Hacker is in the Cabinet Room in 10 Downing Street and is visited by his political advisor, Dorothy Wainwright. She is unhappy that she has been moved from her office, which used to be next door. The Prime Minister had apparently acted upon advice from the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Humphrey Appleby. Dorothy tells Hacker that the civil service has been trying to relocate her for three years. She makes the case that her room is of strategic importance as it enables her to overhear ministers who may be keeping things from the PM. Hacker is immediately swayed by her argument and orders Bernard to move Dorothy back.
Outside the Cabinet Room, as Bernard makes a call to relay his instructions, Sir Humphrey enters and commands him to stop. He vigorously makes the point that they have striven to remove the 鎼僲possible woman as she may 鎻穙nfuse the PM: in fact, she makes him doubt everything that his officials tell him. Dorothy joins them and Sir Humphrey is quick with the flattery, calling her 鎻筫ar lady. He swiftly changes the subject and chastises Bernard for allowing someone into Number 10 without a relevant security pass. He stresses that this is mandatory even if they are known to the police officer at the front door. Dorothy is more concerned with her office and tells Sir Humphrey that she is to move back right away. The mandarin disagrees angrily and goes into the Cabinet Room to see the PM.
With a typically loquacious argument, Sir Humphrey persuades Hacker that Dorothy really does need to remain upstairs. He assures the PM that he can have her written or verbal advice whenever he needs it. Hacker caves in and asks Bernard to send Dorothy back in. The PM tells her hesitantly that he has changed his mind, but she suspects that Sir Humphrey is behind it. She points out that the Cabinet Secretary wants to be the only channel of communication to the PM, and Hacker once again alters his view. They discuss how Sir Humphrey鎶 wings might be clipped. He is also Head of the Home Civil Service, but responsibility for pay and rations rests with the Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, Sir Frank Gordon. Dorothy suggests giving all of Sir Humphrey鎶 duties to Sir Frank. Hacker invites Sir Humphrey back in and tells him that Dorothy will be moved back once and for all. The civil servant is reluctant to refuse in her presence, but still won鎶 give a straight answer. Dorothy then leaves and the PM advises Sir Humphrey that he is considering relieving him of some of his professional burden. In addition, since Sir Humphrey works in the Cabinet Office, an adjoining but nevertheless separate building to Number 10, Hacker tells him he will be sent for if and when needed.
Sir Humphrey is troubled by this new authority coming from Hacker, especially since this new policy could upset the balance of power between his Cabinet Office and Sir Frank鎶 Treasury Department.
The PM sits down with Sir Frank Gordon, but instructs Bernard beforehand that they are not to be interrupted. Hacker starts discussing his plan of transferring Sir Humphrey鎶 HCS responsibilities to the Treasury. Meanwhile, outside the room, Sir Humphrey has arrived unannounced and Bernard informs him that, from now on, the PM would like a prior phone call to check if his visit is convenient. Sir Humphrey seethes and bullies Bernard into telling him who is in with the PM. He then ignores Bernard鎶 pleas and looks into the Cabinet Room, where Sir Frank alerts Hacker that they have company.
Sir Humphrey meekly asks if he can be of service, and when the PM declines his offer and asks him to shut the door, he does so from within the room. Hacker orders Sir Humphrey to leave and terminates his interview with Sir Frank. He angrily shouts for Bernard and orders him to confine Sir Humphrey to the Cabinet Office by locking the communicating door and taking the key.
Later, Sir Humphrey rings Bernard and requests an audience with the PM. When this is denied, he states that he鎶 coming anyway, and appears in an instant, obviously in the possession of a duplicate key. He insists that Bernard tells him the location of the original, but, summoning up his courage and looking his boss in the eye, the Principal Private Secretary stands his ground. Sir Humphrey...(and so on)

Main article: Ford Mustang
The much larger 1973 Mustang was a far different car than the original 1964 model. Ford was deluged with mail from fans of the original car who demanded that the Mustang be returned to its original size and concept. Upon taking over the presidency of Ford Motor Company in December, 1970, Lee Iacocca ordered the development of a smaller Mustang for 1974 introduction. Initial plans called for the downsized Mustang to be based on the compact Ford Maverick, which was similar in size and power to the Falcon upon which the original Mustang had been based. Those plans were later scrapped in favor of an even smaller Mustang based on the subcompact Ford Pinto. Such a car, it was believed, could better compete with smaller, sporty import coupes such as the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri, then built by Ford of Germany and Britain, and sold in the U.S. by Mercury as a "captive import."
Dubbed "Little Jewel" by Iacocca himself, the car sold well, with sales of more than 400,000 units the first year. (It is worth noting that four of the five years of the Mustang II are on the top-ten list of most-sold Mustangs.) The Mustang II featured innovations such as rack-and-pinion steering and a separate engine sub-frame that greatly decreased noise, vibration, and harshness.
The Arab oil embargo, skyrocketing insurance rates, and United States emissions and safety standards destroyed the straight-line performance of virtually every car of the period. In 1974, Chrysler ended production of the Barracuda and its stable mate, the Dodge Challenger. American Motors also discontinued the Javelin at the end of the 1974 model year. GM nearly discontinued the Camaro and Firebird after 1972.

1974
The 1974 introduction of the Mustang II earned Ford Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year honors and actually returned the car to more than a semblance of its 1964 predecessor in size, shape and overall styling. Iacocca insisted that the Mustang II be finished to quality standards unheard of in the American auto industry. Though the Mustang II boasted many superior handling and engineering features, its performance by today's standards could be described as only "mediocre" however, equal to other Ford or Detroit products of the day. The Mustang II was positioned to compete head-on with many foreign sports car imports that were hitting the market at that time. The Toyota Celica and the Datsun 280Z were its main competitors. Available as a coupe or three-door hatchback, the new car's base engine was a 140cuin (2.3L) SOHC I4, the first fully metric engine built in the U.S. for installation in an American car. A 171cuin (2.8L) V6 was the sole optional engine. Mustang II packages ranged from the base "Hardtop," 2+2 hatchback, a "Ghia" luxury group with vinyl roof, and a top of the line V6-powered Mach 1. The popular V8 option would disappear for the first and only time in 1974 (except in Mexico). Mustangs lost their pillarless body style; all models now had fixed rear windows and a chrome covered "B" pillar that resembled a hardtop, but in fact was a coupe. In Mustang advertisements, however, Ford promoted the notchback coupe as a "Hardtop." Sales for the Mustang II increased in 1974, making it the 6th best selling Mustang of all time with 296,041, units sold.
1975
Since the car was never meant to house a V8, it became a scramble to re-engineer the car to reinstate the 302cuin (4.9L) V8 option in time for the 1975 model year. To make the V8 option fit, changes were made to the front fenders, engine bay, and header panel, and the engine was limited to a two-barrel carburetor and "net" 140hp (104kW). Since Ford of Mexico never lost the V8, they assisted in the modifications. Although tepid by today's standards, the car's stock 302 performed quite well by 1970s standards. The Mustang II's 302cuin engine became Ford's first officially designated metric V8 Mustang; it was called the "5.0L" even though its capacity was 4.94L. Other than the optional V8 engine, the car underwent minor changes in 1975. The Ghia received opera windows and a padded vinyl half-top. In mid-year, a 2.3L "MPG" model was added, featuring a catalytic converter and a 3.18:1 rear-axle ratio (standard was 3:40:1) to claim EPA-version economy estimates of 23mpg-US (10L/100km; 28mpg-imp) in the city and 34mpg-US (6.9L/100km; 41mpg-imp) on the highway.[1] To underscore fuel efficiency, all base 2.3L Mustang IIs were called MPG after 1975. An elaborate diamond and emerald Aigrette, set in silver. Part of the Iranian Crown Jewels.
The Imperial Crown Jewels of Iran (alternatively known as the Imperial Crown Jewels of Persia) includes several elaborate Crowns and decorative Thrones, 30 tiaras and numerous aigrettes, a dozen jewel laden swords and shields, a vast amount of precious unset gemstones, numerous plates and other dining services cast in precious metals and encrusted with gems and several other more unique items (such as a gemstone globe) collected by the Iranian monarchy during its 2,500 year existence.

Safavid and Afsharid Conquests
The majority of the items now in the collection were acquired during the Safavid Dynasty which ruled Iran from 1502 to 1736 AD. An Afghan invasion of Iran in 1719 saw the then capital at Isfahan sacked and the Iranian Crown Jewels taken as plunder by the invaders. By 1729 however, after an internal struggle of nearly a decade, Nader Shah Afshar successfully drove the Afghans from Iran. In 1738, the Shah launched his own campaign against the Afghan homeland. After taking and raiding the cities of Kandahar and Kabul, as well as several principalities in northern India and sacking Delhi, the victorious Nader Shah returned to Iran with what remained of the plundered crown jewels as well as several other precious objects now found in the Iranian Treasury. These included several heavily jewel-encrusted thrones and a copious number of diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires and other precious gemstones. Four of the most prominent acquisitions from this conquest were the Koh-i-Noor and Darya-ye Noor diamonds (both originating from India and still amongst the largest in the world), the Peacock Throne and the Samarian Spinel.

Mohammad Reza Shah crowning his wife, Empress Farah at their coronation ceremony in 1967.
Modern Usage
The crown jewels were last used by the Pahlavi Shahs, the last dynastic family to rule Iran. The splendor of the collection came to the attention of the western world largely due to their use by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi and his Queen or Shahbanu (Empress) Farah Pahlavi during official ceremonies and state visits.
The Iranian Crown Jewels are considered so valuable that they are still used as a reserve to back the Iranian currency (and have been used this way for several successive governments). During the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi in 1937, ownership of the Imperial treasury was transferred to the state. The jewels were transferred into the vaults of the National Bank of Iran and where they were used as collateral to strengthen the institution鎶 financial power and furthermore as backing for the national monetary system.[1] This important economic role is perhaps one reason why these items, which are undeniably symbols of Iran's monarchic past, have been retained by the current Islamic Republic.
Public Display
Due to their great value and economic significance, for many centuries the Iranian Crown Jewels were kept far from public view in the vaults of the Imperial Treasury. However, as the first Pahlavi Shah had transferred ownership of the crown jewels to the state, his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi decreed that the most spectacular of these items should be put on public display at the Central Bank of Iran.
When the Iranian revolution toppled the Pahlavi dynasty in 1979, it was feared that in the chaos the Iranian Crown Jewels had been stolen or sold by the revolutionaries. Although in fact some smaller items were stolen and smuggled across Iran's borders, the bulk of the collection remained intact. This became evident when the revolutionary government under the presidency of Hashemi Rafsanjani re-opened the permanent exhibition of the Iranian Crown Jewels to the public in the 1990s, where they remain to this day.

Volvic is a brand of mineral water. Its source lies in the just to the north of the Puy de D?me. The water's distinctive mineral content is due to the nearby volcano which last erupted in 5760 BC: geologically speaking, very recently.
The first of the springs in the area was tapped in 1922, and the first bottles appeared on the market in 1938. Today, Volvic waters are internationally known. Over 50% of the production of Volvic water is exported to more than 60 countries throughout the world. Two bottling plants produce over 1 billion bottles of water annually and are the principal employers of the local commune. In 1993, the Volvic Company was bought by the Danone Group.
Since 1997, Volvic has been using PETE, a recyclable material, to make their bottles.
Volvic also produces a range of fruit extract drinks in Europe named Volvic Touch of Fruit. In 2005 they were introduced in North America under the brand Volvic natural.
George the Volcano and Tyrannosaurus Alan
Recent television advertisements for Volvic feature two fictional characters: a tyrannosaurus rex named "Tyrannosaurus Alan" and a volcano named "George the Volcano". George the Volcano's voice is by Matthew Berry and the voice of Tyrannosaurus Alan is by Rick Buckley.
Recent campaign
Volvic's recent campaign, "1L = 10L FOR AFRICA", means that for every one liter of Volvic purchased they promise to provide 10 litres of drinking water through their "well-creation" programme with World Vision in the countries of Ghana, Malawi, Mali and Zambia.

In a multistage vacuum system, the vacuum line between the roughing pump and the high vacuum pumps is called the foreline. Vacuum systems are no longer exclusively used by scientists in research. They are used in numerous industries that range from food products to electronic components. The classic foreline is the hose or tube connecting a rotary vane pump and the outlet of an oil diffusion pump, although vacuum technology now uses a vast array of roughing pumps and high vacuum pumps.
The word foreline is not found in any dictionary although the term has been used for many decades by anyone working with high vacuum systems, and in literature concerning vacuum systems. It is not allowed in Scrabble at this time. The reasons for these omissions are unknown.
The foreline is mentioned in the brief introduction to the basics of the vacuum: [1] and in vacuum product FAQ lists: [2]

A LAN party is a temporary, sometimes spontaneous, gathering of people together with their computers, which they network together primarily for the purpose of playing multiplayer computer games. These local area networks (LANs) come in various sizes, from very small (two people) to very large (more than 10,000 people). Small parties can form spontaneously, but large ones usually require a fair amount of planning and preparation on the part of the organizer. The current world record for number of computers connected in the network at a LAN party is 10,445, set at DreamHack Winter 2007, in J?nk?ping, Sweden.[1].
LAN party events differ significantly from gaming centers and Internet cafes in that they are generally bring your own computer (BYOC)[2] and are not permanent installations, often taking place in general meeting places or residences.

History

A large (approximately 300 people) LAN party in a sports hall in northern Germany.
LAN parties originated from early single-player Unix games such as Larn, Hack, Rogue, and Hunt the Wumpus that kept scoreboards on a centralized server.[3] At this point the majority of the people playing these games were university students who had access to such systems for schoolwork. Another early incarnation of network gaming was Xanth Software F/X's MIDI Maze. Programmed for the Atari ST, the game allowed up to 16 computers (though any number above four caused instability) to be linked together via the ST's MIDI ports and deathmatch games to be played over the makeshift network. With the release of Bungie's Pathways Into Darkness and id Software's Doom in 1993, the gameplay that MIDI Maze pioneered was perfected, with the latter allowing four players either to cooperate in the game's singleplayer campaign or to fight each other in a deathmatch game. As a result, network gaming (and consequently LAN parties) grew. The initial explosion for the LAN Party scene occurred with the release of Bungie's Marathon on the easily-networked Macintosh platform in 1994. By the time Id Software's Quake was released in 1996, the release of Windows 95 and many low-cost Ethernet cards had brought relatively easy ad-hoc networking to the Windows PC, further expanding the popularity of LAN Parties.
Small LAN parties
Usually smaller LAN parties consist of people bringing their computers or other gaming consoles over to each others' houses to host and play multiplayer games.
These are sometimes established between small groups of friends, and hosted at a central location or one that is known to all participants. Such events are often organized quickly with little planning, and some overnight events, with some stretching into days (or even weeks). Because of the small number of players, games are usually played on small levels and/or against bots.
A small LAN party requires a hub/switch, with enough ports to accommodate all the players, a fair amount of power, and suitable surfaces for all the computers. Providing refreshments is often also a duty of the host, though guests are usually asked to contribute. In larger parties where participants may not all know each other personally, an entry fee may even be charged. Another tradition of some small groups is to purchase large amounts of fast food for consumption over many days. Many LAN participants will also bring energy drinks and other food to consume over the course of the party.
To set up these parties a network hub/switch isn't always required. If all the computers have Wi-Fi capability, an ad-hoc network may be set up. This allows two or more computers to connect over a wireless connection, thereby eliminating the need for a wired network.
When some of the participants cannot...(and so on)

List of painters would be good
- ideally grouped by date &/or nationality Johnbod 17:14, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
the grouping "by date &/or nationality" is clumsy and counterproductive. the section headed "United States" seems stimulated by a single sentence about 19th century american painters, and includes subsequent discussion about watercolor tutorials (published in england) and industrial pigments (developed and primarily manufactured in europe). similarly, "20th century" marks one sentence about 20th century painters and then an extended discussion of u.s. regionalism, in particular california and ohio painters.
the point of this section was to trace the development of the medium as it progressed through a variety of specific innovations (new pigments, gallery acceptance, watercolor societies, amateur tutorials, better papers, etc.). arguably, even today, there are really no "national" traditions in watercolor painting, in the sense that all the national traditions one may want to identify hinge entirely on marketing, politics and/or painting style, and not on differences in the techniques or materials used by the painters. (this is an article about a *painting medium*, not about *art history* per se.) compare, for example, to the asian tradition of using entirely different brushes, papers, themes and pigments in scroll paintings, which are technically also watercolors or watermedia but which genuinely comprise unique techniques.
the "list of painters" idea is simply bad. i have inserted illustrative names only as markers for a specific stage in the development of the medium: here are some typical examples of what was being done. once you embark on the project of making a list, you spend all your time on inclusion issues (hi, jose fadul!) and boundary issues -- what about canadian national watercolor painters? what about watercolor painters who also use collage, glitter and acrylic paints? good luck with that.
i let these ill advised insertions stand so that some discerning wikipedia editor will acknowledge the inherent problem and remove them, or at least reorganize the content to make them less nonsensical. Macevoy (talk) 16:43, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Change in intro
I changed the intro from technique to method. Simple terms better. Smilegood
Format
I've tried to make the Format better and put in a See also section to make it easier for users to find information on the wikipedia. I will try and get back to work at this page again sometime. Artypants 14:43, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Spelling
Why is this page called watercolor, it is not an american article, surely it should be spelled in the correct as opposed to the american manner, that is, Watercolour.--Greatestrowerever 11:14, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
It was apparently begun in American spelling, and is not on a specifically Brit subject, so those are the rules. Of course W-colour redirects. Johnbod 12:29, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
It was begun in the correct (that is American, also Shakespearean) spelling. No reason to change it to the incorrect Commonwealth variant, created by the Norman upperclass to make things less Latin, and more French. --Cultural Freedom talk 2007-07-31 18:54 18:54, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
revisions
i have substantially edited, corrected, augmented and fact checked this uneven and incomplete article, and added several references. random typos or lapses may remain. with the visual arts project in mind, i have tried concisely to describe the important techniques or technical issues in a way that the reader can accurately visualize and understand. i have also explicitly addressed several misconceptions that have been handed down from the 19th century. i regret that i do not have the wikipedia expertise to integrate the article into other aspects of wikipedia or harmonize it entirely with wiki style, but i hope a wiki guru will offer the charity of his or her assistance. i believe this is now the best single document reference on watercolor painting available from any source on the web.
